This documentation is for the configuration of “postfix” and “cyrus” under SLES11 SP1.
NOTICE: THIS DOCUMENTATION IS NOT ABOUT INSTALLING LINUX, WINDOWS, THUNDERBIRD, VMWARE OR POSTFIX. POSTFIX IS ALREADY INSTALLED UNDER SLES 11. YOU ONLY NEED TO INSTALL CYRUS.
Postfix is a “Mail Transfer Agent” for sending and recieving Mails in and outside of your network. Postfix is listening on TCP-port 25.
SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) is used by Postfix to handle and forward e-mails in other networks. For authentification of users SMTP listens on port 587.
Cyrus is a Mail Retrieval Agent which supports the protocols IMAP and POP3 and works together with SMTP servers. A Mail Retrieval Agent gets the mails from a mailserver.
POP3 (Post Office Protocol) is a transferprotocol for an e-mail client (in this documentation Thunderbird) which gets the messages. The protocol works over TCP-port 110 (alt. free port can be configured) and can recieve, list and delete messages on the mailserver. When recieved the messages on the server will be deleted. You can configure to keep them on the server but if you delete the local mails in your client the mails will be delete on the server at the next synchronization.
IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) is used to save mails, directorystructures and options on the mailserver to prevent a the loss of data when your pc breaks. The protocol is working over port 143, with TLS over 993
SASL (Simple Authentication and Security Layer) is used by different protocols like SMTP, IMAP and POP3 for authentification.
